All water pumps use impellers to move coolant. This image shows the impeller (silver, at right) and electric motor assembly of a Meziere 300-series LS electric pump. The exact design of the impeller varies between mechanical and electric pumps, mainly because a mechanical pump spins at varying speeds. The impeller of an electric pump moves at only one speed: the one that's most efficient. (Photo courtesy Meziere Enterprises)

Here's Meziere's "300-series" bolt-on electric water pump for the LS engine family (PN WP319R, $702.90). The "R" stands for red, but you can also have this pump in blue, black, polished, or chrome, and can even get a 16-volt upgrade. It comes standard with a heavy-duty 55-gpm electric motor. Also shown is a billet inlet water neck (PN WN0019R, $116.60) and wiring installation kit with relay (PN WIK346, $34.98).

After a baseline run, in which the lightly modified LS7 belted out 469.2 hp and 448.7 lb-ft to the tires, George Benson's Z06 is allowed to cool awhile before disassembly. The job begins with removing the air intake and throttle body, followed by the serpentine belt. After the coolant is drained, the upper radiator hose is disconnected.

The only engine "accessory" that really needs to be removed to gain access to the stock water pump is the belt tensioner. Because the Meziere 300-series pump includes a built-in idler pulley (which does nothing but spin), the factory belt routing will remain unchanged-and will make our installation very simple.

Next, the lower radiator hose is disconnected. Only a few bolts hold the stock water pump in, and it slides up and out easily. Even the stock thermostat housing can be left attached.
