01. The ’14 Corvette Stingray features General Motors’ first use of shape-memory alloy (SMA) in a production vehicle. The Corvette design team asked GM R&D scientist Paul Alexander to invent an actuator system to expel cabin pressure from the vehicle’s rear-hatch area while the hatch was being closed. It had to be lighter than the cinch-latch solution used on some C6 base coupes, and it needed to make the hatch-closing process up to 30 percent easier than the single-latch system on the ’06-’08 Z06.
