In addition to showing off the latest Z06, Chevy chose the NAIAS to introduce the all-new C7.R racer. The car will make its competition debut later this month at the 24 Hours of Daytona race, where it will compete in the recently formed Tudor United SportsCar Championship series.

The new C7.R uses the aggressive bodywork of the Z06, a decision based on aerodynamic, rather than cosmetic, concerns. The street car’s aero package is so effective, in fact, that it required no additional downforce modifications to be made ready for racing use.

The C7.R also employs the underpinnings of the new Z06 (and Stingray), which confer additional benefits. The frame is fully 40 percent stronger than that of the outgoing car, a difference Corvette Chief Engineer Tadge Juechter says was noticed “immediately” by Corvette Racing team drivers.

Not carried over from the Stingray and Z06 is the LT1 engine architecture. Instead, the C7.R relies on a direct-injected version of the LS-based engine successfully used in the previous C6.R model. Still, using DI improved the car’s fuel efficiency by 3 percent, enough to obviate the necessity for one pit stop over the course of a typical endurance race.

While Chevy hasn’t released any lap times for the C7.R, a source tells us the car has been extremely impressive in preseason testing. It will face competition from Porsche, BMW, Ferrari, Viper, and other marques in the new Tudor series.
