Upstate New York's Ross Gerken hammers the Indy asphalt at the U.S. Nationals. Gerken's '66 F/Gasser won its class at several major events in the late '70s and could always be counted on for a starting-line wheelstand. The C2 coupe was easily the most popular body style in the Gas and Modified Production classes. Photo by Marty Johnson, from the Jim Hill Collection

Bill Bussart's H/Gas '62 leaves hard at an NHRA Winston Championship Series points meet at Warner-Robins Dragway in Georgia. A 288ci small-block Chevy (in this case equipped with Kinsler-modified Crower fuel-injection system) wound to 9,000-plus rpm was typical of the heavy-car, little-motor formula used in the upper Gas and Modified Production racers.

Drag Racing Corvettes 1967 Corvette Coupe
Paul Mercure's "Check-Mate" moniker has graced many different drag machines over a career spanning four decades. Although he's the '05 IHRA Top Stock Eliminator world champ, Mercure began his career running Modified Eliminator. This '67 coupe, shown running G/Gas at the NHRA Molson Grandnational in St. Pie, Quebec, carried Mercure to several Mod titles in the late '70s.

Modified Eliminator racing often pitted wildly disparate cars against each other. Here, Tom Turner's F/Gas '65 waits for the green against a rotary-powered C/Modified Compact Mazda during the NHRA Winternationals. The winner of this round is unknown, but it should have been an interesting match-up. Photo by Leslie Lovett, from the Jim Hill Collection
