When we left off last month, the bodywork on our "Son of Zombie" '87 project car was nearing completion. With only the detail-oriented blending left to be finished on the car's rear, our focus this month is on that portion of the job. We'll get to the front bumper in a future issue.
We chose quality-driven American Custom Industries for our front- and rear-bumper updates, and this month we examine another modernizing modification: the addition of '96 Grand Sport fender flares. Team VETTE chose Mid America for these pieces, which have been available through the Corvette aftermarket for some time now.
When the parts arrived, we peeled back the GM packaging and began the installation. Although a screw-in-style kit was included with the flares, Tim Gutierrez of Strictly Vettes in Denver assured us we didn't need to mount them in that fashion. Instead, he used panel bond to secure both the flares and the entire rear to the car. After allowing it to cure, we have to agree with Tim's assessment: Short of a serious accident, these pieces are not coming off.
With the Greenwood high-rise hood and louvers already covered, our '87's stylish new look is nearly complete. Join us in the future as we finish our bodywork and apply paint. Until then, check out the accompanying pictures to see how we're doing.
