Striving as always to bring you the most complete coverage of the Corvette hobby, VETTE Magazine has dug deeper than ever into the archives of Corvette lore from the past three decades to bring you would-be classics that never quite made it into production-and a couple that still might, courtesy of our highly-placed and well-bribed sources at GM.
Retro-Fit Airbags for Vintage Vettes.Supplemental Restraint Systems, or airbags as they're more commonly called, have been a fact of life in every 1990 and newer Corvette. Like 'em or not, airbags have probably saved a lot of lives over the past decade, mostly (unfortunately, since these morons ought to be removed from the gene pool) people who are too dumb or too lazy to bother fastening the safety harnesses that have been installed in all cars since Big Brother first started meddling with cars and protecting us from ourselves.
But, we digress. Airbags do provide an extra level of safety in crashes. So we were quite interested when we recently heard about a new and revolutionary Retro-Fit Airbag System that can be adapted to all '53-89 Corvettes. With that in mind, we made arrangements to get one of the first production systems and installed it in a '72 Stingray. The entire installation took less than five minutes, and the owner is ecstatic. Now he can crash into other cars with relative impunity rather than driving around obstacles like burning Pintos and crapped-out Dodge Omnis.
