This '69 roadster drew a lot...
This '69 roadster drew a lot of pre-auction attention. It's a fully documented, 6,200-mile original car that received a Bloomington Gold Survivor award. Bidding was strong for this car, and when the hammer finally fell, it registered a sale of $210,000.
In addition to Konkle's 19 Corvettes, there were nine additional ones brought by various owners; they also sold with no reserve. The most interesting was a red, fuel-injected '60 roadster. This matching-numbers, multiple NCRS award winner commanded a solid $81,000.
In addition to the prices listed above, the buyers were required to pay a 10 percent buyer's premium. This translates to a total of 6.9 million dollars being exchanged for 109 cars. The top seller was the Monza Red '69 L88, which, with the buyer's premium, went out the door for $401,500.
While prices fell short of the over-inflated sums recorded a few years ago, they were ultimately satisfying for both buyers and sellers in San Diego. This auction confirmed that Corvettes, especially big-block models, are still worthy investments.

Investment quality means not...

Investment quality means not only original and low-mileage, but also highly optioned. The Cortez Silver '69 survivor met that requirement with its L71 engine, two tops, power steering and brakes, and power windows.

On Saturday morning, RM's...

On Saturday morning, RM's staff staged all of the cars in the hotel's parking lot. In Chamber of Commerce-perfect San Diego weather, potential bidders took this last chance to check out their potential purchases. This Scott Tiemann-restored, Milano Maroon, '65 fuel-injected coupe later sold with a final bid of $75,000.

The first of Glen Konkle's...

The first of Glen Konkle's Corvettes to cross the auction stage was this '65 fuel-injected coupe. It was an attractive, but older, restoration that brought what the seller must have seen as a mildly disappointing $53,000.

Big-block Corvettes continue...

Big-block Corvettes continue to hold sway with buyers, as this Nassau Blue '66 confirmed with a high bid of $72,500. Documentation for this low-mileage coupe included the original window sticker.

One of the gems of the Konkle...

One of the gems of the Konkle collection was this '67 roadster. In addition to the stunning pairing of Marina Blue with a white-and-blue interior, it was equipped with an L71 435hp engine. Bloomington Gold, NCRS Top Flight, and a win at Meadow Brook were all part of its pedigree. When the bidding closed, the hammer came down with a high bid of $195,000.

The cherry on top of RM's...

The cherry on top of RM's auction sundae was this beautiful Monza Red '69 L88. This highly documented coupe was a drag racer in its former life and only showed 2,265 miles. It came with its original sale documents, Protecto-O-Plate, and NCRS Top Flight and Bloomington Gold awards. Perhaps not surprisingly, the car brought top dollar at the event with a sale price of $365,000.

Nothing in the Corvette world...

Nothing in the Corvette world draws more attention than an L88. This is one of the two from Konkle's collection that were offered at the San Diego RM auction. The Bloomington Gold-certified coupe is one of only 17 produced in 1969 with an automatic trans. The high bidder shelled out $192,500 for the privilege of taking it home.

One of the nicest of the nine...

One of the nicest of the nine non-Konkle Corvettes at the San Diego RM auction was this delicious '60 fuel-injected roadster. This NCRS Top Flight award winner sold for $81,000.
